Back wrap dress tied with a bow: A Sew Over It Molly top hack

    July 12, 2021 /

I love following a pattern, but sometimes, when an idea strikes you and you see an image of a garment right in front of your eyes, but can’t think of a pattern to use, it presents a great opportunity to get creative with what you have. This was the case when I saw this Art Gallery fruity jersey in the fabric shop. I knew I wanted a dress that would wrap over at the back and have a tie at the top for good measure, because we all know how much I love me a bow (and it’s also functional, preventing the dress from potentially slipping down the shoulders). I…

The Joys of Slow Sewing and Pattern Adjustments: McCall’s M7974 Dress

    June 13, 2021 /

The lovely Sally of @modistasewing organised a challenge in April which encouraged sewists to share pattern adjustments they make to achieve a better fit. The #memademodista challenge inspired me to sink my teeth into the M7974 by McCall’s that I’ve been lusting over since it came out. Now that their patterns come digitally, it was easy to get during one of their 4.99 $ sales. The bodice comes with a plunging v-neck, gathers at the bust and shoulder to add shaping, a back yoke, and a midriff panel. I knew I would have to toile this and adjust the bust to make it sit in the right place, and this…

    ME-MADE MAY 2021: Rediscovering your me-made wardrobe

    April 28, 2021 /

There are so many challenges going on in the sewing world, but one that stands out and that nearly everyone knows is Me-Made May set up by Zoe of SoZoeWhatDoYouKnow in 2010. Since then May has become a month of discovering new sewing accounts on Instagram, getting inspired by fabulous makes of the whole community. While it may seem that sharing your outfits for the duration of the month is the main idea, it’s not the case though – the goal is for you to set your own challenge (make a pledge) that will help you get to know your handmade wardrobe, discover what you wear the most, which items…

An exercise in tracing and cutting flimsy fabric: Burdastyle asymetric trench coat

    April 18, 2021 /

If you saw my Make Nine on Instagram, you know one of the items on the list was a drapey trench coat. I didn’t have a specific pattern in mind, but put an image of a Burdastyle 02/2018 pattern in dusky pink drapey fabric there as a possible contender. I was also considering the Victory patterns Ulysses. But then I saw a gorgeous trench coat made by Vesna of @kelerabeus on Instagram and was instantly drawn to the asymetric hem, the soft lapels, and the back pleat. She used another Burdastyle pattern, this time from the 04/2018 issue. I own this one and have considered the pattern before, but until…

Like so many of us, I have been spending more time at home than I would like these past few months. This has had a profound effect on my wardrobe. Usually I am a very dressy kind of girl, no matter the occasion. Pretty dresses or blouses and skirts were always my go to. However, these are not the most practical to wear at home, or rather I do not feel like wearing them, saving them for something more special. Like… I don’t know… actually going to the office sometime this year? Anyway, back to my working-from-home wardrobe, which now consists mainly of leggings and jersey tops. I’ve made a…

    January 31, 2021 /

As you could have read in one of my previous posts, at the start of this whole Covid-19 business, I got into knitting. After the success of my ginormous Find Your Fade shawl I decided it was time to try my first sweater. Well, I say first… I knit a couple in my teens, however, always under my grandma’s supervision and with lots of help. This time, it was all up to me, as grandma was 150 kms away. While it tends to be a newbie knitter’s first choice, I decided a plain sweater from chunky wool wouldn’t really be my thing. For ages I’ve been drooling over Andrea Mowry‘s…

    December 23, 2020 /

With Christmas just around the corner, I thought I’d share this festive little number made from wine-red ponte roma fabric from Dům látek. I bought it in the autumn with some fabric money I received from my colleagues at work and I knew I wanted to turn it into a comfortable, but classy dress. As soon as I came across the Belgravia dress by Liesl + Co., I knew it would be that one! I love waist ties, but this dress takes it to the next level. The waist ties are integrated into the front bodice pieces which have enough excess volume to substitute for bust darts. When tied, this…

Ravello + Elodie = Ravlodie? The best of two wrap dresses

    November 20, 2020 /

You know how it is. You spot a new pattern, instantly fall in love with it, impulse buy it, then you sew it up, put it on, and the thing that all sewists dread comes to pass – the fruit of your hours-worth of labour is just a bit, well, underwhelming. Or just not quite right for you. When the Sew Over It Summer Dreaming E-book came out, I was really drawn to it. All the pretty colours and the Indian backdrop made me snap it up immediately after release. I particularly loved the Ravello dress, especially the short version Lisa wears made from the mustard Atelier Brunette double gauze.…

Stripes and pintucks: a Burdastyle shirtdress love affair

    October 22, 2020 /

Shirtdresses are one of my favourite things to wear. They can look really smart, buttoned up to the top, or more casual when left more open, with the sleeves rolled up. This Burdastyle pattern from the 01/2010 issue is a particular favourite. It features beautiful pintucks along the button band and a lovely pleated skirt, a mandarin collar , and narrow cuffs with a bias-bound placket. When I saw this shirting from a top Czech manufacturer in Textile Mountain, which sell deadstock fabric in Prague, I knew it was destined for this pattern, with a few modifications. For this version, I drafted a rounded collar and used the mandarin collar…

Lockdown knitting: Find Your Fade shawl by Andrea Mowry

    October 4, 2020 /

My grandma is a big knitter. Everytime I wanted a sweater, she would knit me one, she even sometimes knits for my friends. She tried to teach me when I was a teenager. I managed a couple of scarves and a sweater for myself, but I would run to her or mum for help everytime anything other than straight knitting was involved. Then I got into sewing and forgot about knitting altogether. This spring, however, amidst lockdown, when I was paradoxically extremely busy with work, uni, and another course I was doing, I didn’t really feel like sewing most of the time, but still wanted to do something with my…

🇬🇧Last weekend as part of procrastination I 🇬🇧Last weekend as part of procrastination I whipped up this quick Estelle dress by @sewoveritlondon - it’s my second version of this pattern, this time in a solid jersey and with a cap sleeve. I went down a size and shortened the bodice by 1cm this time to perfect the fit. Love it 💖
I used 1.6m of organic cotton jersey from my local fabric shop.

…
[ENG] Throwback Thursday - This is the #Simplicity [ENG] Throwback Thursday - This is the #Simplicity8606 wrap skirt I made about three years ago from a crepe. I don’t tend to buy polyester fabrics, but I have to admit that the fact that this doesn’t crease at all is very handy. I wore it out last night with a black silk cami and was reminded just how perfect it is for twirling on the dancefloor 💃🏻. I have another in an Atelier Brunette viscose twill, and I also used it in a dress with a different bodice (you’ll find both somewhere on the grid).

….
[ENG] Like the previous pattern I have shown you, [ENG] Like the previous pattern I have shown you, with this green dress I took a pattern and through several modifications transformed it into exactly what I wanted. That’s the beauty of sewing, anything is possible!

The basis for this pattern was the @sewoveritlondon Emma dress, because I wanted a ponte dress with princess seams, which would replicate my beloved RTW dress I’ve had for more than a decade and it shows 🙈

I widened and deepened the neckline at the front and made it v-shaped at the back. In hindsight, instead of just deepening the neckline, I should have also pinched a bit out, as the neckline is slightly gapey now. I’ll remember for next time. I also omitted the zipper, as the ponte does not need it.
I wanted a wider skirt, so I used the panelled #SOI1940sTeaDress one, and matched the panels to the princess seams.

Because green and magenta is my fave colour combo, I’ve been wearing it with my @tailoressstudio #WhitmoorCardigan
[ENG] Here’s my hacked #SLPJoelleDress in full. [ENG] Here’s my hacked #SLPJoelleDress in full. As you can see, apart from eliminating the peak-a-boo I also changed the skirt for a panelled one, using the skirt of the #SOI1940sTeaDress, leaving one of the centre seams partiaĺLY open to create a slit.

If you think it looks more like the @sewlovepatterns Chloe dress, you’re right and if you’re going for the same look, definitely go with the Chloe. But when I got the Joelle, the Chloe wasn’t out yet.

The fabric is a lightweigt polycotton suiting from my local fabric shop.

…

[ENG] You can never have enough party dresses, rig [ENG] You can never have enough party dresses, right? Even if you don’t go to that many parties! 😅
I had a sudden urge to make a little red dress and here she is! It’s a modified @sewlovepatterns #SLPJoelleDress where I eliminated the peak-a-boo and changed the skirt. You can read all about the changes on the blog (link in bio and blog highlights). I’ve essentially turned it into the Chloe dress also by Sew Love Patterns, which hadn’t been out yet when I bought the Joelle.
…
[ENG] The more seams you have on a garment, the ea [ENG] The more seams you have on a garment, the easier it is to perfect the fit as you go. The @french_poetry_ Lune dress has a centre front seam on the skirt which reaches up to the bustline. When I tried the dress on, I didn’t like how loose it was around the midriff, so I simply took it in and it worked a treat. I didn’t trim the seam allowance, because who knows, I might need to let it out later 😅.

I also mentioned I changed the construction a bit - the pattern tells you to attach the bodice lining to the main fabric at the neckline and then work with it as one piece. That would mean the seams at the bust would be visible on the inside. I prefer a cleaner finish, so I worked with it as you would with it as a separate layer, so that the internal seams are hidden.

…
Když jsem si rozdělané šaty zkoušela, přišly mi pod prsy a v pase moc volné, a právě v tomhle švu šly krásně zabrat.

[ENG] Here’s the @french_poetry_ #FPLune in all [ENG] Here’s the @french_poetry_ #FPLune in all its glory. 💖 I love it, especially the fit. I did make a couple of tweaks to make it fit perfectly & tweaked the construction to get the inside neater, which I’ll share soon.

Fabric: #MoonstoneGreen by @atelierbrunette

…
[CZ] Šaty Lune of #FrenchPoetryPatterns v celé své kráse! 💖 Moc se mi líbí a krásně sedí. K tomu jsem potřebovala pár menších úprav a taky jsem trochu upravila postup šití, aby byly krásné i zevnitř. O to se s vámi taky brzo podělím.

Látka je viskóza #AtelierBrunette koupená u Markét z @revoart.cz
[ENG] Remember the first collection of fabrics @at [ENG] Remember the first collection of fabrics @atelierbrunette brought out and how everyone swooned over the moonstone print? It was the first expensive fabric I ever bought and I turned it into a Sew Over It Marguerite dress. I still love that dress, but I love this print even more, so a couple of years ago I snapped up the last couple of meters and finally turned it into another dress as my last make of last year.

This time I made the @french_poetry_ #FPLune dress, which has a gorgeous v-neckline at the front and back and a really interesting cut across the bust. You can get a bust-cup extension pack if you’re worried about faffing around with the fit.

[ENG] How is your sewing going in the new year? I’m having a bit of a slow start and not a very clear vision of what I want to make next. So so far this is the only thing I made. It’s a modified version of the @sewlovepatterns #SLPJoelleDress which I finished last Sunday and took it out dancing Tuesday night 💃🏻 - a perfect going-out dress. I’ll share details of the modifications and the full dress soon.
…
[CZ] Jak vám to šije v novém roce?
